Speaking of cultural appropriation:

Idk if the user in question has done this, but I do know that a lot of the people who engage in this kind of cultural appropriation of Jewish ideas also have been falling for the following idea. So I want to be explicitly clear about this.

Anybody who knows anything about me—and I mean ANYTHING—is that I do not gatekeep Judaism. Jews by choice, patrilineal, atheist jews, etc. You’re all Jews and your Judaism is as valid and equal to the Judaism of the most orthodox practitioner imho.

But, sorry Charlie:

There is no such thing as a “teacup mikveh.”

You do not become Jewish because you “feel” Jewish. You become Jewish because you’ve put in the work.

You don’t put some water in a cup and anoint yourself with it to become a Jew.

What you are describing is a baptism. Baptisms are not Jewish.

If you wish to become Jewish, contact an actual rabbi and put in the work.

It’s not gatekeeping Judaism to point this out. Judaism gatekeeps itself. I’m not making myself the arbiter of who is and is not allowed to be Jewish. I am pointing to the big Building of Judaism and drawing your attention to the deep stone carvings that have been there for thousands of years that say: “We don’t do baptism. That’s not a Jewish thing. Stop it.”

So, a big name account here that talks about mysticism and has definitely made money on discussions of Jewish mysticism (they have a seemingly well-funded Patreon, among other things) has now said "No Zionists on my page" without actually, you know, specifying what they think a Zionist is.

I dunno, but isn't that pretty textbook cultural appropriation? I'm sure they'd say that Good anti-Zionist Jews are welcome, but that's the minority, and once people start putting up these lines, how long before any Jew is suspect?

Making a little pinned post for goyim who stumble across this blog. Nothing in your background, none of your experiences with marginalization, nothing at all makes you exempt from having internalized antisemitism. The best thing you can do is seek out a wide range of all jewish voices with no preconceived notions, hear how different things affect their lives and oppression, and take that into account about what you say and do. The first resource I recommend for dealing w antisemitism in leftist spaces is called “The Past Didn’t Go Anywhere” by April Rosenblum. This is a jew with a long history of palestinian advocacy and she has done a great job at breaking down where antisemitism happens. Link at the bottom. It was written in 2007 and remains depressingly relevant today. This pamphlet is 24 pages, a bit long, but very thorough. This pamphlet is the barebones details of what’s antisemitic btw. The things listed in there are basic “nearly every jew in the world” would agree things. There is more than just what is contained in there that’s antisemitic and your best resource is gonna be listening to jewish voices. No tokenizing. No dismissing. Just listening and seeing what makes sense. That said, this shit is essential reading because it gives you the tools to start making spaces safe for jews. If you don’t care about that then, well, you probably don’t belong on this blog.

EDIT: In an ideal world I would like a binational one-state solution with a right of return for jews and palestinians as well as massive reparations for palestinians. I don’t identify as a zionist. And. I know jews who identify as zionists who want the exact same things I do. If your rhetoric is calling for violence against those people you can fuck right off. Here's a fun random question: Is there such a thing as a secular Jew?

Like, we have secular Christians who do the bare minimum to call themselves a Christian and participate in Christian holidays. Are there Jews that do that? Like maybe they were born into the faith and participate in the culture but they aren't like. Super religious about it all and if they miss something, it's not a big deal for them?

oh absolutely. there are some jews who will eat a bacon cheeseburger then fast all day with their family on yom kippur then not speak another word of hebrew till passover. but i think for jews it’s less abt doing the bare minimum to still be considered a jew bc judaism is a tribe, and more abt spending important days with their family or connecting with their culture.

and like obligatory 2 jews 3000 opinions and i’m not the Ultimate Authority on judaism, but the thing that’s different imo abt judaism vs christianity (at least western christianity) is that christianity is a faith-based religion. generally, if you don’t align with christian theology, or at least say “yeah ok jesus sure”, you are by definition not a christian. for jews, there’s multiple different axes on which jews can interact with judaism, but the two that are probably the most helpful to gentiles in understanding the jewish people’s complex and varied relationships to judaism: religiosity and observance.

religiosity is about what you believe. do you think god exists? what is god? what are your beliefs about creation? how do you interact with jewish spirituality? and honestly, you could probably even break religiosity and spirituality into two different categories.

observance is about what you do. do you abstain from eating pork and shellfish? do you light candles every friday night? do you attend synagogue regularly? do you just go on yom kippur? do you wear a kippah or tichel?

to a lot of people who aren’t jewish or aren’t familiar with judaism, they might think that if someone is religious then they’re obviously observant, and if they aren’t religious then obviously they aren’t observant. but you will meet jews who keep fully kosher, light candles every single friday, observe even the most minor fasts, celebrate all the holidays, and think the notion of god is bullshit and saying the shema is just a way they connect with their ancestors. you’ll also meet jews who haven’t lit candles since they moved out of their parents’ house, eat bacon for breakfast, only go to synagogue on yom kippur, and believe that god created the universe and calls the jewish people to heal the world through good deeds and charity. you’ll meet jews who are deeply spiritual but don’t believe in god. you’ll meet jews who go to synagogue every saturday morning but don’t know a lick of hebrew. and that’s the coolest thing about judaism for me is that there are a shit ton of rules that you can study for years and years and you still don’t have to follow a single one to be jewish if you’re already part of the tribe.

The first time I heard the term cultural Christianity it gave me words to explain my experiences as a Jew. Cultural Christian atheists aren’t still Christian but they sure do talk to and treat me just like fully religious Christians have. The fact that I can’t go into predominantly ex Christian atheist spaces as an atheist and not be exposed to antisemitism and Islamophobia. The fact that I can’t escape the fucking term “sky daddy”.

A lot of these people are leftists who like to put forward how progressive they are but will spout the most bigoted shit in the name of atheism. How they talk about atheism sounds so much like how evangelicals Christians talk about Christianity. They are the ones who are right about everything and those religious people are mentally ill idiots. It sounds so much like Christian supercessionists who pity Jews for not being able to accept Jesus as the messiah. How they will call themselves the “completed” Jews. Which mirrors how ex Christian atheists refuse to acknowledge religious Jewish atheists.

People from religious minorities need words to talk about our experiences and so far I have heard no suggestions on replacements that fully explain the experiences I and other Jews have had. Instead I have had hate hurled my way by people refusing to understand that having privilege from being part of the dominant culture doesn’t mean they can’t have been hurt by it. The idea that you have no culture is a dangerous one. Just because Christian culture has had a bigoted past doesn’t mean it’s evil. Pushing this idea that Christianity isn’t a huge part of western culture just forces assimilation onto those of us outside of it.

I have had bigoted fully religious Christians understand that they are part of the dominant culture. They and cultural Christian atheists both want Jews to no longer exist they just want it to happen in different ways. Religious Christians want us to either convert or go to Israel to kick start their apocalypse. Cultural Christian atheists want me to shed every part of my Jewish culture because it’s tied to religion all while they get to keep what they want from Christianity. Sundays off, Christmas, Easter et-cetera while I must give up my own and assimilate.

I just want ex Christian atheists to understand. Your culture is not something you have to shed fully. It’s not something you are tainted by. Your culture can be beautiful and it isn’t evil. Just like my own culture is beautiful and meaningful to me and a connection to my ancestors. Take what you find meaningful from it and discard what you don’t but don’t act like you don’t have a culture and have no privilege from it. Having privilege doesn’t mean you have to get a huge amount of power out of it either it just means you benefit in some way. I hope this helps anyone having trouble understanding

to be honest, even when I did identify with radqueer (obviously before I decided to recover and actually take care of my mental state) I never understood the concept of TransReligions. I am Jewish we are from an orthodox Jewish family however we as a system are mostly secular, but we have some alters who are more frum than others. Anyway, I have the saw a few TransJewish people when I did identify with RQ.

That always confused me because why not just convert? I am aware of a conversion process to Judaism is very long and I think you get denied at least three times before converting but I’m not sure of the entire process because again we were born and raised in a Jewish family. I just don’t get it instead of appropriating Jewish culture because being Jewish is also an ethnicity why not convert? We accept converts we view converts as 100% Jewish. When you convert you have to learn to adapt to the ethnicity as well as the faith so instead of half assing shit and calling yourself “TransJewish” just like you’ll get papers you will get to actually be accepted into the Jewish community and I’m pretty sure it would be worth it if you actually want to be Jewish

Genuinely, I do not understand “TransReligions” because I also saw some for religions that don’t even have a long conversion process like Judaism does I saw TransChristian and I’m pretty sure Christianity all you have to do is accept Jesus and youre Christian like what do you mean “TransChristian” it just doesn’t make sense

Since then I’ve seen videos of the IDF doing a “TikTok trend” of posing in front of bombs going off in the background, a video of a burning house with a screaming Palestinian woman and crying baby inside and the Israeli who lit the fire singing as he records, a podcast called Two Nice Jewish Boys where they both claim to speak on behalf of all Israelis when they say if they had a button they’d wipe Gaza off the map and they “don’t give a fuck” about the children, a video of a man and pregnant woman that had been strung up by their necks outside of a building by the IDF, the murder and harassment in the West Bank where they cannot cry “Hamas.” And just yesterday video of Israelis taking nice little family boat tours to watch the skyline lit up by bombs. They’re taking their children on a family gathering to watch other children being murdered. These families are being considered first settlers for the “real estate” in Gaza that they’ve destroyed and will further colonize. Almost all Israelis serve in the IDF, it is a requirement unless you’re exempt from conscription, so to my mind that makes them culpable. Many have dual citizenship, I know a person who used to bounce back and forth from NY to Israel bc he served in the IDF. These people are doing the most horrendous shit imaginable and then coming home to your neighborhoods. And no, this has absolutely nothing to do with being Jewish and everything to do with racism and a sociopathic degree of entitlement via Zionism and that includes Christian Zionism because they are funding this shit, they are at the heart of our government like a malignant tumor.

It’s a year later and I still cannot believe this is life, I cannot believe there is an entire country filled with grandparents, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters who are largely content with a million children, their neighbors, being starved and being maimed at their hand, I cannot believe the people in this country fighting for Israel’s “right” to do so, I cannot believe we share the planet with people like this. Like there is still something somehow surviving in me that does not want to believe this. This thing just gnaws at me and there’s this idea many people have like then why care, why watch such disturbing things, why make yourself uncomfortable by bearing witness to the suffering of others. Can you imagine being in that situation with your babies and your loved ones and the entire world turning its back on you. Because that’s what they’ve received for 80 years already, it’s about time we all got uncomfortable with the unacceptable.

Scientific Morality

            Can one man make millions of people fight in a war? It has happened numerous times throughout history. Kings, emperors, aristocrats and feudal lords have, as have religious leaders. In a hierarchy, the king decides who’s to live and who’s to die. Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu gives the orders to bomb and attack its neighbor states. The first causality of war is the truth. Netanyahu and his advisors from the Likud Party will accuse the Arabic states of harboring Islamic terrorists. The Likud Party will demand that the state get rid of terrorists or Israel will do it for them. Then, Israel will play games of espionage, such as dressing up like Arabs and bombing an Israeli city, then blaming the deed on some terrorist group. Oh? You think that is farfetched? Why do you think the government won’t let you see its classified files? This aint no conspiracy theory! This is normal war strategy. You think the C.I.A. plays by the rules? What is that adage? “Winning isn’t everything. It is the only thing.”

            Both major political parties in the USA are pro-Israel because the Jewish vote is important in winning political office. However, if the Likud Party wants to expand Israel’s territory, it must have a compelling point to get America involved. How will the U.S. government sell the war to the American people? How about orchestrating a fake terrorist attack? You know? A 9/11 event?

Do white protestants give a shit about a Jewish state in a desert? Not really. Oh, maybe some Evangelical sect who believes in Bible prophesies does. What do they call themselves? Oh yeah, “Christian Zionists.” There is another cult called “Messianic Jews.” Will America sacrifice their sons and daughters for fanatical Christians? I don’t think so. How about the rich WASP ruling class? What does Israel have that is valuable besides sand? Offshore drilling? Not much of it. Then what is worth having a war over and why should America care?

            For one thing, Israel is the friendliest country in the Mid-East to the U.S.A. It is a perfect location for military bases. The Arab state is rich in oil reserves. The next war for oil will be more easily managed with military bases in Israel. Israel needs more land and America needs more oil. The most likely way a war will happen is if another terrorist attack is waged upon Israeli children and mothers. Will that come to pass?

            The issue of antisemitism is not going to fly. Eventually, the goyim are going to realize that it is kosher to criticize bad Jews. Serial killer, Son of Sam David Berkowitz, was one. If I criticized Black street gangs (i.e. the Crips or the Bloods), would that make me racist? Hell, no it wouldn’t! So, it’s okay to criticize revisionist Zionists or right wingers, like members of the Likud Party.

            The responsibility of the political leadership of Israel is up to the Jews who live there. Supporting right wing Zionists is political suicide! Islamic terrorists will not push Israel into the sea; it will be revisionist Zionists, like Netanyahu and the Likud Party. If I was antisemitic and I wanted to kill the Jews, all I would do is sit back and watch the Jews kill each other.

If the Israeli Left doesn’t stand up and do something, Israel will not be celebrating its Centennial.

ive already expressed how bunk the culturally christian discourse is but something else occurred to me and its that the discourse not only alienates exchristians (on purpose) but also alienates poc, largely i think also on purpose. because ive seen so many false equivalence posts insinuating that backlash against culturally christian is the same as resistance to the idea of ‘white privilege’ or that being ‘culturally christian’ is the same as being white in a racist society. and so many people keeping this discourse going are white and trying to call out other white people for having another level of what theyve interpreted as unilateral all encompassing privilege, going back and forth on how privileged the cultural christians (exchristians, people raised atheist, people who have converted to other religions, jewish folks and muslims too now if they breathed the wrong too christian air or lived in the wrong country) are and equating it to being inherently racist. and you can see how this analogy doesn’t work for people of color and literally anyone marginalized in any other way. even if you think ‘culturally christian’ works as a term (it doesn’t but go off, mostly because yall stripped it of anything meaningful from conception) how can you say its equivalent to white privilege even for poc without being racist? for all this “you need to unlearn christian biases!” none of you are unlearning your racist biases.

being ‘culturally christian’ is not a person of color’s version of white privilege you myopic racist fucks. the white ‘culturally christian’ enjoyers are either trying to dodge some sort of guilt or accountability but it shows how they use intersectionality is broken and oversimplified otherwise we wouldn’t be having this discussion in the first place. its no surprise a concept made by a black woman (intersectionality) is misused by white folks. and no, i don’t care if youre white and nonchristian saying this, if you can make those kind of claims with no nuance then i get to do the same. a lot of the popular bloggers who say this are white and reblog from people known to harass poc anways...
